# How to estimate GPU rental cost: compute, storage and idle time

Start with the full configuration and the amount of work. An hourly rate without runtime and billing rules does not establish a task’s budget. Use the cost diagram and your own figures below; this is neither UZ Dynamics pricing nor a performance forecast.

## Use one period for the whole budget

For time-based pricing, use the hourly rate of the entire rented configuration. Check what it includes, such as GPUs, CPUs and system memory. If a rate is per GPU, first establish the cost of the required resources. If it already covers the entire configuration, do not multiply it by the GPU count again.

Add storage, data transfer and other costs for the same period. Do not add items already included in the rate. Calculate different configurations or rates separately, then add the results. Token-based or request-based API pricing uses a different billing unit and cannot directly replace an hourly rate.

Budget = full configuration rate × billable hours + storage + data transfer + other costs

## Separate useful work from billable time

Billed time can include environment setup, execution and waiting. For example, Runpod Serverless charges for worker startup, request execution and the wait before shutdown. Pulling the container image before the worker starts is not billed. These are one service’s rules, not a universal cloud billing standard.

Check when billing begins and ends, minimum duration, rounding increments, and rules for restarts and idle time. Apply these to each billable interval before converting the result into hours. Do not round each stage separately if the provider rounds the entire session.

Measure a small, representative workload. Account for setup and retries when they are billable. If idle time is already included in the rental duration, do not add it again. A lower hourly rate alone does not establish a lower cost per result: compare measurements with the same quality requirements.

Task time and billed time can differ

Compute resource

1. ### 1\. Setup
   Environment startup and model loading
2. ### 2\. Execution
   Training or processing requests
3. ### 3\. Waiting
   Resource running without useful work
4. ### 4\. Stop
Check that compute charges have ended

Count each billable interval once: setup and idle time may already be included in the total rental time.

Data storage

A retained disk or volume may still incur charges after compute stops. Terms depend on the storage type and service.

The diagram shows stages, not their duration or share of the cost. Service terms determine which stages are billed.

## Check costs that remain after stopping

Stopping compute does not always end every charge. Retained disks or separate volumes may still incur costs, depending on the service and storage type. Check whether billing uses allocated or occupied capacity and how storage duration is counted. Do not convert a monthly rate into hours using an arbitrary number of days.

Data transfer may be charged separately. Check inbound and outbound traffic, included allowances and overage rates. Enter the calculated storage and transfer amounts for your chosen period below. Include applicable taxes and paid extras if they are not already included. Adding account credit is not itself the cost of a task; use actual charges.

## Enter values you have checked

Use the same currency and calculation period for every amount. Hours must already reflect the provider’s billing rules; the calculator does not infer rounding, minimum duration or GPU speed. Leave unknown values blank. Enter zero only when a cost is absent or already included elsewhere.

This worksheet calculates expenses from your inputs. The site’s GPU sizing calculator serves a different purpose: estimating configuration and memory needs. Neither confirms pricing, resource availability or runtime without checking the specific offer and workload.

### Calculate the costs you know

Enter your own figures for one chosen period. A blank field means an unknown amount. Enter 0 only when there is no separate charge or it is already included in another line.

The interactive calculation needs JavaScript. To calculate it yourself: whole-configuration hourly rate × billable hours + storage + data transfer + other costs. Use the same period and currency for all amounts.

This is an arithmetic calculation, not a UZ Dynamics offer or a provider invoice. It does not apply a provider’s time or amount rounding rules and does not estimate performance.

## Two scenarios to check your estimate

One-off experiment. Measure setup and one representative run. Estimate retries, checkpoint storage and downloading results. Compare stopping compute between runs with keeping it available: lower idle costs may come with repeated setup. Decide which data to retain after completion and for how long.

Continuously served model. Define exact period dates, required availability and expected traffic. For identical configurations running in parallel, sum their billable hours. Calculate different rates separately. Include billable waiting, additional instances and storage; do not replace a calendar month with a fixed hour count.

## What to prepare for a cost discussion

Collect the inputs and mark the unknowns. This lets you check an offer item by item and update the estimate with measurements after a test.

- Task, model or application, amount of work, quality requirements and deadline.
- Configuration, billing unit, billable time and rounding rules.
- Storage capacity and duration, data transfer, taxes and extras without double counting.
- Rules for stopping and deleting resources, retaining results and recovering from a failed run.

## Estimate your workload and request access

UZ Dynamics is in early access. These guides help describe a workload; they do not confirm GPU availability, a ready environment or execution speed. Availability, the exact configuration, prices and access terms need confirmation when discussing your request.
